In this article I will be explaining about my current computer system, which consists of 4 Raspberry Pi computers. They are 1 – model 2, 2 – model 3 B+ and 1 – model 4, 4 gb memory.

Originally I had each of the 4 in their own case. This setup did not stack very well so I ordered, received and assembled a 4 unit stack. This consists of 5 pieces of cut out fiber glass pieces and enough metal stand off units, which have a threaded inner hole on one end and a threaded extension on the opposite end that goes through holes in the fiberglass boards and connect to each other. This makes for a much neater setup on my desk.

I have set up a static address on each of the 4 computers so I will be able to identify each computer. The system I have worked out is as follows:

  1. For the model 2 I have set the static address to 192.168.1.121. The 192.168.1.xxx is required on my systems as that is what is assigned by my Internet Service Provider (ISP). Some ISPs assign 10.10.10.xxx to their systems.

  2. For the model 3s I have assigned 192.168.1.131 to one and to the other I assigned 192.168.1.132.

  3. For the model 4 I have assigned 192.168.1.141.

  4. As you can see the middle number of the last 3 digits corresponds to the model number of the computer. Using this system I could have 10 computers of each model.

  5. I have a model 0 – Zero on order and plan to make the last 3 digits = 101.

On the model 2 the main program I have installed is called INLETS. This program allows me to connect to DigitalOcean.com (a cloud provider) that provides a static IP address that is accessible from the internet and then to my Raspberry Pi computers. It was working good for awhile but now it no longer works so I now need to find out what the problem is and correct it so it is working again,

On the 131 model 3 I have installed a Web application powered by Joomla known as MyRaspi-JM.xyz. This program is similar to the one MyRasoi.tech that is running on the Dreamhost.com web host system. The 132 model 3 has another web site powered by Wordpress.org software called MyRaspi-WP.xyz.

On the 141 model 4 computer I have the MariaDB.com database called naturally MariaDB-server. The programs on both of model 3s connect to this database to store their data. I am also in the process of relearning Ruby on Rails programming language and I will then be running more applications on that system. It is also connected to 2 RAID1 disk setups. The one consists of 2 – 1tb hard drives and 3 – 64gb USB flash drives. So far only the 1tb drives are being used. The 5 drives are connected to a powered USB hub which is then connected to the model 4 computer.

The hub is connected to the power source as the power supply on the Raspberry Pi computers is not powerful enough to power this many external devices.

I am Gerald S. Brown.

My wife and I are now living in the Philippines since 2004 in a subdivision that had 9 houses when we moved in and now has over 30. Of those 9 house there were 5 doctors and an assortment of other nationalities. There are now 10 doctors here.

I had my first programming class in 1975 at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan.

In 1976 I purchased my first computer. A Commodore PET, which was an all-in-one system with a 9” monochrome screen, a tape drive for storing programs and data and a chicklet (little squares) keyboard. One reason I purchased that was because it had only one (1) wire, the power cord.

Another computer available at that time was the TRS 80 system, which was produced by the Tandy Radio Shack company. I think that had several pieces that were wired together.

Since that time I have had numerous computer systems. My current set up consists of 1 No-Name desktop assembled by a local computer store, a HP laptop with 15.6 screen, a 1 TB hard drive and 8 GB RAM. And also are the four (4) Raspberry Pi computers. The first was a model 2 B, the next two were model 3 B+ and the last was a model 4 B.

You may have noticed the S at the end of Site. This is because I am in the process of creating 4 sites.

I was planning on using my Raspberry Pi computers to run my web sites from my home office, but in Sept 2019 my Internet Service Provider (ISP) Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) down graded the firmware in my modem and closed all ports that were previously opened. I then decided to host my web site on Dreamhost.com where I have been a customer since 2010.

Recently I discovered a program called “Inserts”. This provides a gateway to/from Digitalocean.com so now my Raspberry Pi computers can be reached from the Internet. I will be having an article on that program in the future.

The site I now have running on Dreamhost.com is powered by Joomla and the address is http://myraspi.tech. You may be wondering about the “tech”. I figured the Raspberry Pi is technical piece of equipment so I started using the “tech” is now available.

The next one is http://myraspi-jm.xyz. This site is also powered by Joomla and is hosted on one of my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ computers. The reason for the “xyz” extension is because Namecheap.com was making this available for only $1.00 for the first year.

The next is similar to the previous one in that it is also hosted on one of my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ computers except the name is http://myraspi-wp.xyz and it is powered by Wordpress.

The last one at this time is also powered by Wordpress but is hosted at Wordpress.com. This one was unplanned but I wanted to use the JetPack on the above site but in order to install this plug-in I had to sign up at Wordpress.com. I wanted to use MyRaspi as my domain name there too but it was already taken and the last post there was in 2016 so I was given the name of http://themyraspi.wordpress.com

A little history of the site.

As I am getting a little older I like to relate history on various topics. This one is about this web site and how and why it was created.

  • Originally I was going to have this site running on one of my Raspies but in the middle of September 2019 my Internet Service Provider (ISP), Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) decided to downgrade the operating system of my modem and closed all 65,535 ports on the modem’s firewall. This means the main ports of 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) used for web site access were included in the closed ports and no one will be able to access this site from the Internet, only from my home network, which is NOT good.

  • I then moved the site to a Web Hosting Service, Dreamhost.com that I have been using for hosting my web sites since 2010. I plan to have an article on them some time in the future.

  • I have a new program called “inlets” that I can use to access my Raspis from the internet by creating a tunnel through Digitalocean.com

  • I have been using computers since 1975 and have created numerous applications and web sites, but what got me interested in creating this one is I have recently read a book called How to Blog a Book by Nina Amir.

  • I originally started working on this site using the following tools:

    • Libreoffice Writer to create my content. I am still using this program.

    • Pandoc software to convert the files from “files.odt” to “files.md” which is Markdown format and is required by the following program.

    • Pelican which is a Static Site Generator program. It takes the above markdown files and converts them into HTML files. These files are then up loaded to Dreamhost.com the web host for access from the internet.

    • Then at the beginning of this year 2020 I found a website called College in the Clouds where it has an article about using LibreOffice Writer to create an Ebook, which I am interested in. It also contains several other articles including one on how to create an interactive web site as opposed to creating a static web site as created by Pelican. This article was about Joomla which is a program for creating interactive web sites. With it the person does not need to know much about computer programming as the program is written so anyone can create an interactive web site using just drag and drop.

Now that the history is out of the way I can get to the subject of this article which is about the Raspberry Pi computer, what it is, what it can do, and how to use it.

I will:

  • Explain what various versions of the Raspberry Pi are.

  • What software is available (Linux) and how to install it.

  • How to set up the computer in various configurations.

  • Some of the projects I have created and how you too can create them.

  • I will then combine these articles into an Ebook that I plan to offer as a free download to those that sign up for it.
